Our History
Nearly a Century of Advocacy, Leadership, and Military Fellowship
The Military Officers Association of America, National Headquarters, has a distinguished history of serving America's military officers and their families.
The organization was founded on February 23, 1929, in Los Angeles, California, as The Retired Officers Association (TROA). Its founders believed that military officers could accomplish more by working together to provide advice, assistance, and support to fellow officers and their families.
From its earliest days, the association fostered strong relationships among officers from every branch of the uniformed services, creating a foundation of fellowship, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.
As the organization grew, its leaders recognized the need for a stronger national presence to represent military personnel and retirees.
In 1944, the association relocated to Washington, D.C., with approximately 2,600 members. This move positioned the organization to become a more effective advocate for military compensation, benefits, and personnel policies.
Following a membership vote in September 2002, The Retired Officers Association officially changed its name to the Military Officers Association of America on January 1, 2003. The new name reflected its expanding mission to represent active-duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired, and former military officers, along with their families and surviving spouses.
In 2009, MOAA received a federal charter from Congress, recognizing its important role as a veterans service organization.
Today, MOAA represents more than 350,000 members and is recognized as the nation's largest military officers' association. Its work encompasses legislative advocacy, military benefits counseling, career transition assistance, educational opportunities, and support for military families and survivors.
Our Central Florida Chapter
The MOAA Central Florida Chapter proudly continues this tradition of advocacy, fellowship, and service at the local level.
Our chapter brings together military officers from different branches, generations, and backgrounds who share a commitment to supporting the military community.
Through regular chapter gatherings, educational activities, legislative updates, community partnerships, and charitable programs, we provide members with opportunities to remain connected and involved.
Our chapter's service includes supporting veterans and their families, recognizing military achievements, promoting veterans' resources, encouraging future leaders, and participating in initiatives that benefit our Central Florida community.
One example of our continued commitment is Healing Through Expression, a charitable initiative that supports veterans through creative arts and therapeutic expression.
Our chapter also encourages participation in veterans' programs, remembrance activities, and efforts to protect the benefits earned through military service.
Although our members come from different military backgrounds and generations, we remain united by the same values of honor, integrity, leadership, and service.
Our history reminds us of where we came from. Our continued service defines who we are today.
Our Purpose
Advocating for Our Military Community — Continuing a Lifetime of Service
The purpose of the MOAA Central Florida Chapter is to support the well-being of military officers, veterans, their families, and surviving spouses while preserving the traditions and values of military service.
As an affiliated chapter of MOAA National, we promote the organization's objectives at the local level through fellowship, education, community involvement, and informed advocacy.
Our purpose is reflected in six primary areas of service.
- Protecting Earned Military Benefits
We support MOAA National's advocacy efforts to preserve military compensation, retirement benefits, health care, survivor benefits, and other entitlements earned through military service.
We encourage members to stay informed about proposed legislation and communicate with elected representatives on issues affecting the military community.
- Supporting Veterans and Military Families
We recognize the sacrifices made by service members and their families.
Our chapter promotes awareness of veterans' programs, military family resources, survivor assistance, and community organizations that provide valuable support.
We encourage members to help fellow veterans and families obtain information about the services and benefits available to them.
- Promoting Fellowship and Camaraderie
Military service creates relationships and shared experiences that last a lifetime.
Our chapter provides opportunities for members and their families to connect through meetings, luncheons, educational presentations, social activities, and community events.
These gatherings strengthen friendships, encourage mutual support, and preserve the camaraderie that is such an important part of military life.
- Encouraging Community Service and Charitable Involvement
We believe that service continues beyond military duty.
Our chapter encourages participation in charitable activities, volunteer programs, veterans' outreach, and community initiatives that improve the lives of others.
Through programs such as Healing Through Expression and other community partnerships, we seek to make a positive and lasting impact.
- Educating and Informing Our Members
Knowledge and communication are essential to effective advocacy and informed decision-making.
We provide information about military legislation, veterans' benefits, health care, retirement issues, survivor resources, and other subjects important to the military community.
Our website, newsletters, blog articles, and chapter communications help members remain informed and engaged.
- Honoring Military Service and Developing Future Leaders
We honor the dedication, courage, and sacrifices of those who have served our nation.
We also recognize the importance of encouraging future generations to understand and appreciate the values of military service, leadership, citizenship, and community responsibility.
By supporting educational opportunities, recognizing military achievements, and encouraging continued participation, we help preserve these traditions for future generations.
Our Nonpartisan Commitment
MOAA and its affiliated chapters are independent, nonprofit, and politically nonpartisan organizations.
MOAA National actively advocates for legislation and policies that protect the interests of the uniformed services community. These efforts focus on military personnel matters, earned benefits, veterans' concerns, and support for military families.
While MOAA supports a strong national defense, it does not take positions on specific military strategies or individual weapons systems, recognizing that such decisions belong to the nation's serving military leadership.
As a nonpartisan organization, MOAA may advocate for issues and legislation, but it does not endorse or oppose candidates for public office or participate in political campaigns.
The Central Florida Chapter follows these principles, encouraging informed civic participation while remaining focused on the welfare and interests of the military community.
Our Commitment to the Future
The MOAA Central Florida Chapter remains dedicated to building a strong, informed, and supportive military community.
We welcome opportunities to work with fellow military officers, veterans, families, surviving spouses, community organizations, and future leaders who share our commitment to service.
Whether through advocacy, fellowship, education, charitable involvement, or simply helping a fellow veteran, we believe every act of service makes a difference.
Together, we honor those who served, support those who serve today, and strengthen the future for generations to come.
