President’s Message – March 2026

I was reminded waking up two Saturdays ago of the high price our most precious of patriotic Americans paid in Operation Epic Fury. Please send extra prayers to the families of the American services members who have been killed or wounded. For those of you who have upcoming overseas trips, I urge you to register your travel information before you depart with https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/smart-traveler-enrollment-program .html In my past travels I found it extremely helpful when the State Department sent me very specific alerts, informative messages, and locations of the nearest Embassy/Consulate during my overseas trips. The main State Government website is https://travel.state.gov .

By the looks of the new buds coming out on my Bald Cypress trees, I believe Spring has Sprung in Central Florida! Luckily, we are turning our clocks forward on March 8h to give us an extra hour of sunshine for all the new growth that is occurring. I’m wishing you all the luck of the Irish on
March 17th, and don’t forget to “Welcome Home” our Vietnam Veterans on their special National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29th. Mark your calendar for March 10th as we are having our monthly luncheon with special guest speaker Navy veteran and past American Legion District
Commander Kurt Gies, the Founder and Executive Director of Challenge22. www.Challenge22Inc.com exists to end veteran suicide by raising awareness and funding programs that save veterans’ lives.

If it’s been a while since you’ve attended one of our MOAA Central Florida Chapter luncheons, please reserve April 11th (our only Saturday luncheon) to come out and celebrate our JROTC Scholarship Cadets, their family and cadre. This is my favorite luncheon event as it’s an opportunity to showcase the achievements of our future military leaders and recognize them with the generous financial donations from our chapter members. Lastly, I know there are chapter members who don’t always come to our luncheons and thus may not get a reminder that the $20 membership dues we each pay to support our chapter are now overdue. We rely on the dues to help pay for items such as meals for our guest speakers, and other operating costs such as our Chapter Insurance policy. You will find the form to send in your $20 on the last page of the Focus, or go to www.moaacfc.org and click the “Donate” link. We need your support, and while you are at it, please update your information (especially your spouse) so we can keep in touch! For those celebrating Easter, I wish each of you a joyous Easter celebration on April 1st! I hope to see you all on March 10th for your monthly Chapter Luncheon!
Cheers, Lorraine

President’s Message – September 2025

It’s become obvious that summer is turning the corner when we see coffee companies bringing out their fall collection that includes “pumpkin bread with cream cheese flavoring” and our grocery stores are propping up their collection of yummy snack food items to eat while watching College Football games! I’m hoping that everyone has returned from holidays away, and ready to catch-up with each other at our September 9th MOAA luncheon at the DoubleTree UCF. We have a terrific guest speaker, Army veteran Mike Kepner, the Director UCF Military Veterans and Student Success Office. Out of the 69,818 enrolled UCF students, there are well over 2,000+ veterans and family members who are enrolled in this Fall Semester. There is every reason to believe some of the veterans will re-enter military service and become our future leaders in uniform! Not a MOAA Member? We encourage anyone who is interested to attend this luncheon and connect with a huge resource for our local veterans in Central Florida. If you are eligible to join our MOAA Chapter, the first lunch is on the Chapter if you join!

Please give pause and remember the souls we lost, and the families left behind on September 11th as it marks the 24th anniversary of the tragic attack on the New York City World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the hijacked planes crashed.

I encourage everyone to come out and attend the City of Orlando’s September 19th, 2025, POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony that honors United States military prisoners of war and those still missing in action as part of national POW/MIA Day. Join Mayor Dyer at 10:30am in the Devos Family Room at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, and hear from special guest speaker, Army Private First-Class Jessica Lynch, the first successful rescue of an American POW since World War II. See below for additional information.

I thank MOAA members Angela Hong, who is the President of Central Florida Korean Association, and her husband MAJ (ret) Ron Navratil for their continued efforts to raise awareness and honor our veterans. On August 16th, in support of the 80th anniversary of the National Liberation Day of the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Association highlighted the service of Lake Nona Community Living Center Korean Veteran Tech Sergeant Richard Decker. Several members from the Chapter can attest that the events honor our veterans with colorful entertainment, commodore, and delicious, authentic food that makes the events even more meaningful. Mark your calendar for their next event on October 4th; see below for more information>

Central Florida Korean Association Korean Thanksgiving event October 4th at 5pm There will be a Central Florida Korean Association Thanksgiving Korean event October 4th at 5pm and all are welcomed. There will be special recognition of any attending Korean War veterans. The event will include entertainment and a dinner provided afterwards. All activities are free and open to everyone. The event is held at the University of Florida Extension/Education Center, 6021 S. Conway Rd., Orlando, FL 32812. POC is Angela Hong President Central Florida Korean Association 407-968-7474 and MOAA MAJ (ret) Ron Navratil, 321-689-2775

We are excited to announce our Healing Through Expression is hosting a Veteran Artist Showing on October 11th from 4pm-8pm at the DoubleTree Orlando East – UCF Area. The DoubleTree is located at 12125 High Tech Ave. Orlando. Typical with a high-end art showing, we will be showing off our veteran’s artwork and hearing stories about how unleashing their artistic abilities has brought to their lives. Like what you see? Support our veterans by offering to purchase their artwork! If you are looking for a great date night, along with live music, appetizers and a drink coupon will be offered to each attendee. This is also a perfect venue to bring along someone to meet our MOAA Chapter members and artists, and if eligible, become a Chapter member. Please come out and support this first of a kind event to honor the efforts of our local veteran artists!

AN APPEAL: Our current Board of Directors Secretary is Joanie Fiebrandt and she has done an outstanding job keeping our Board Minutes straight. Joanie has taken on more responsibilities in other areas to help her community, and family, and we are looking for an immediate replacement for her. It’s not a time-consuming position, but an important one that requires a presence on a Zoom Board Meeting when we have them (about every two months). The Board Members are given a detailed agenda, and the Zoom is recorded. Please give Joanie a call (954-695-5222) or email jfiebrandt@yahoo.com to gain more information – I would like to make this happen sooner rather than later to free up Joanie! And it goes without saying that I’m not disappearing from our MOAA Chapter I now sit on 10 different Veteran Councils as the MOAA representative and this is mutually exclusive from being the President. I will continue to sit on the councils, and like all organizations, we need new blood at the helm as the MOAA President for our Central Florida Chapter!!

Cheers, Lorraine

President’s Message – July 2025

I hope you all are enjoying your summer vacation and enjoying time with your family and friends! For those of you that have been away, welcome home, and for those of you still seeking relief in cooler places, I can’t fault you for being away!

Just a reminder that our next Chapter luncheon is September 9th.

I am the MOAA representative on 8 different veteran related councils in Florida, and I’m fortunate to have a close friendship with our VA Lake Nona Outreach Coordinator Harold Borrero (he spoke at a previous luncheon). The VA continues to seek out veterans who are not enrolled and asks that we encourage them to consider doing so. VA.gov offers a wealth of information for not only the veteran, but families and surviving spouses. I’ve put together “Cliff Notes” with a few links in this newsletter and a VA Welcome Kit is attached to the email to pique your interest. Our VA is funded based on the number of enrolled veterans. You served your country, and this is one of your earned benefits.

Looks like scammers haven’t taken the summer off and are up to their old tricks to deceive our members. Please be wary of opening emails that ask you to purchase gift cards; we have a Treasurer that controls our chapter funds, and rest assured no one from our chapter will ask you to make a purchase.

Please give thought to joining our Chapter Board of Directors. We are long overdue to having new faces represent our chapter. We especially need a Secretary to record the minutes when we have a Board Meeting. I produce a detailed agenda and the meeting is recorded. We learned at our last luncheon that COL (ret) Kin LaFate has decided to relocate, so that leaves a vacancy for our Chapter Vice President. And it goes without saying that for many years now I’ve asked to have new blood at the helm as our Chapter President. I’m not going anywhere, as I’m deeply entrenched in our Veteran Councils and will remain so as the MOAA representative. Being the Chapter President is a very rewarding position and if you are looking to add another layer of purpose and meaning to your life, I can’t think of a better opportunity!

Cheers, Lorraine

Presidents Message

June is upon us, and just like clockwork, our hurricane radar is not far from our minds.  Please see the attached flyer on reminders how to prepare ahead of time, and the article below to jog your memory of what it takes to prepare for the before, during and after storms.  We are having our luncheon on June 10th, and we will skip July and August until more of our members return from their vacations.  June 12th is Women Veterans Recognition Day, and please see the two upcoming events below. June 14th is not only Flag Day, this year we also celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the US Army!  The latest MWR attraction list can be found on our website at www.moaacfc.org (under Current News) for those of you that are sticking around for the summer.  For those of you traveling, I wish you safe journeys!

President’s Message – May 2025

President’s Message

It is with great pride I announce that our 2025 JROTC Scholarship Selection Board chose 8 of the finest cadets in Central Florida! We are now up to 37 JROTC High Schools in our catchment area. Without the generosity of our chapter members to contribute to our scholarship fund, our ability to issue a check for $1,000 to each cadet would not be possible. I thank you for seeing the goodness of our program and supporting the future leaders of our military! I would be remiss if I didn’t thank members of our chapter for making our scholarship program a reality on April 12th: LTC Dean Ptaszynski, COL Kin La Fate, LTC Mike and Vicki Gillett, CDR Randy Fiebrandt and our photographer Nita Seng. I hope you take the time to read the attached bios of each of the 8 cadets. We honored the cadets, their family and cadre on April 12th with a luncheon, and each year I remind myself that this is the most celebrated luncheon of the year with our members. I want to also thank COL Bob Brogan for overseeing and keeping track of the MOAA JROTC Leadership Medal program with our 37 JROTC High Schools (no easy task to keep up with). Several of our chapter members continue to present the MOAA medal to the Junior Cadets, and it’s always exciting to see the delight on the cadets faces as they cheer on their fellow cadets!

This Memorial Day on the 26th day of May, it’s up to all of us to honor the legacy and memory of our fallen noble heroes who we memorialize on what makes our nation exceptionally extraordinary, For some of us, every day is Memorial Day as we accept the deaths of those we know who gave their lives for love of country and democracy we so cherish. We look upon them as our own beloved sons and daughters knowing their patriotic sacrifices live on through safeguarding their memories by future generations to come. President Reagan reminded us that “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”

I want to welcome CPT’s Ashley and Stephen Orf who joined our MOAA family (both West Point graduates). Ashley is active in the veteran community as the VFW Auxiliary Senior Vice President of Winter Springs Post 5405. We all send her and Stephen our best wishes to welcome their first bundle of joy this September (their baby will be our newest Honorary MOAA family member).

I encourage you to attend our May 13th Chapter Luncheon to help celebrate LT Ted Goodwin and COL Carol Reagles 95th May birthdays and hear informative information from our Central Florida Quilts of Valor representative Valerie Philon, who will honor Ted and Carol with a Quilt of Valor to thank them and honor them for their years of service. For those of you that will be taking vacations during the upcoming months, please make memorable memories, and safe travels on your journeys!
Cheers, Lorraine

President’s Message – March 2025

President’s Message
With all the delightful warm weather we are having, the new green buds on our trees lets us know that Spring has Sprung! Luckily, we are turning our clocks forward on March 9th to give us an extra hour of sunshine for all the new growth that is occurring. I’m wishing you all the luck of the Irish on St. Patricks’ Day on March 17th, and don’t forget to “Welcome Home” our Vietnam Veterans on their special day on March 29th. Mark your calendar for March 11th as we are having our monthly luncheon with special guest speaker Brittany Parks, the Strategic Director for Concerned Veterans for America (CVA). CVA has been a supporter of our MOAA Florida Council of Chapter (FCoC) and our organizations have much to learn from each other. I went into their website www.cv4a.org and discovered both MOAA and CVA are supporting the ACCESS Act (Assuring Critical Care Expansions to Support Servicemembers) to expand veterans’ community care options. Like MOAA, the CVA website makes it very easy for anyone to sign a prepared letter that is sent to our federal legislators in support of veteran legislation. If it’s been a while since you’ve attended one of our Chapter luncheons, please reserve April 12nd (our only Saturday luncheon) to come out and celebrate our JROTC Scholarship recipients, their family and cadre. This is my favorite luncheon event as it’s an opportunity to showcase our future military leaders and recognize them with the generous financial donations from our chapter members for their achievements. Lastly, I know there are chapter members who don’t always come to our luncheons and thus may not get a reminder that the $20 dues we each pay to support our chapter are now overdue. We rely on the dues to help pay for items such as meals for our guest speakers, and medals for our JROTC/ROTC cadets. Please note that we have changed our mailing address for our Chapter: MOAA CFC, 10151 University Blvd, PMB 145, Orlando, Fl. 32817-1904. You will see the form at the end of Our Newsletter or go to this website to pay your dues online using the donation button at the top of every page and put dues in the description. We need your support, and while you are at it, please update your information (especially your spouse) so we can keep in touch! For those celebrating Easter, I wish each of you a joyous Easter celebration in April!
Cheers, Lorraine
